What is a Trackback?

So, I’ve gotten some email from people asking “What exactly is a Trackback”

Trackback is a blogging term used to describe when someone links from one blog to another to a specific post.

So your blog is “Tracking” the source of the information or to the information.

Most blogging software automatically posts Trackback links when you link to another blogs entry (you should click on the entry you want to trackback to and then copy and paste the URL).  Most software will automatically create a trackback link. So you will actually get a link BACK to your blog by doing this in most cases.

So, it’s a good idea to directly link to other blogs when you want to use them as a reference to something you just wrote or feel is helpful to your readers.

Unfortunately Blogger.com doesn’t use trackbacks (unless they recently changed it) so you won’t get trackbacks when people link back to you.
