Are You Selling TOO Much?

Can you oversell online? Absolutely. In fact most web surfers expect free information never expecting to pay for anything.

First, let me say I’m currently testing something very interesting.  The other day I was looking around online for some Article ideas.  Somehow (as usual) I ended up at a website and I don’t remember what I was looking for exactly.

Well, I ended up on this websites Blog.  There was an article about long-copy vs short copy and it got me thinking…

I was recently going to re-write a sales letter for one of my products when I came accross this article and I thought it’d be a great time to test short copy. Or, what I’ve decided to call it “Just Show Me What The !^&* I Get For My Money!”

Now this is only an opinion as I have no proof that this is the case, but I do feel as the Internet grows, as more people demand information faster they are moving away from reading long sales letters.

What the goal would be is to write the shortest possible letter.  I’ve also summed it up in several steps:

1. You still need a Headline
2. Then You Show a Problem or a huge benefit in a short paragraph
3. Show Proof Your Product/Service will offer a solution or give desired outcome.
4. Show Your Guarantee & Testimonials
5. Picture of Product with an Order Link

Ok so you’re thinking that’s great but have no idea what this looks like. That’s fine, I’m actually testing this version versus my control on Microsft Adcenter and Overture.

Now a few notes about doing this.

I’m not saying this is going to work with every product or service but I believe a MAJORITY of products and services can be sold effectively this way. My testing so far shows this for my product has outpulled the long copy.

Also notice on the Short version page above there are links to a Newsletter and some articles. This is done because of the Adwords changes that were penalizing pages. I haven’t completed the test to determine if the Short Version website would be considered quality content as far as Adwords is concerned.

This variable is also very difficult to consider since we don’t know Googles algorithm.

I will update you when my testing is complete with actual numbers you can use to decide if this way of selling is something that may benefit your product or service!
